A Rockin’ Christmas

Christmas Eve with Grandma and Grandpa Hep:

King crab, shrimp, and clam chowder!

Isn’t my little Em so cute?

The girls dance at every family event… though Emily looks more like she is attempting the saxophone (Ellie is so adorable in this clip)

The grandkids in their hats and pajamas

Christmas Morning:

Santa brought Carly a cell phone

Santa brought the boys a Wii, games, and lots of accessories

Emily “giving loves” to Tinkerbell, wrapped in the baby blanket Grandma Hep made

The girls playing with their Ponyville sets

Everyone loved their stockings:

The big family gift- Guitar Hero World Tour!

Dun… dun, dun, dun… dun, dun, dun… eye of the tiger!

As a side note, Eric and I have stayed up late every night since Christmas, rockin’ out on the drums and guitar. I have blisters on my hands from the drumsticks and Eric’s left forearm was quivering yesterday while drawing a patient’s blood. Also, for those of you who think that Guitar Hero is going to make you into a real guitarist, I am about to crush your rock-star dreams. Sorry… but the game is nothing like the real thing, although finger dexterity is certainly enhanced! I still like my REAL guitar best!

Even the baby is rockin’

Christmas afternoon with Grandma and Grandpa Mansell:

Carly and Quincy- two gorgeous girls!

Emily always sits so calmly on Grandpa’s lap

Grandpa gave Grandma a Wii- exactly what she was hoping for!

My favorite gift from Eric:

I wore it on the 26th to the Utah/Mavericks game

‘Tis the Season

A holiday tradition I LOVE- 1000 piece puzzles. Dad and I could spend hours together doing one right after another.

Dress-up

This reminds me of younger days playing dress-up with my sisters. We could make-believe for hours. Isn’t it gratifying to watch the past brought back to life by your children?

Note: Carly is wearing my senior prom dress (worn prior to me by Miss Georgia). I later wore the dress to see Phantom of the Opera in California with my college friends.

Don’t you think my girls are adorable? I certainly do!

Washed and ready for bed

I love how my Emzie-pie smells after a bath and lotion.

Cutting, pinning, stitching, and gluing

On Sunday evening Carly and I drove to moms to utilize her sewing machine, as well as her sewing skills. The stockings were already cut and the rick-rack pinned on. Mom stitched around the edges while I cut the fur and hot-glued on the personalized décor.

Note the snowboarders I made for myself and the boys. I was quite satisfied with how they turned out- much better than I had imagined!

Yesterday I hand-stitched the fur and cut and glued on the names. I am thrilled to have completed this project before Christmas- my gift to the ones I love so much!

Thank you mom for allowing me to drip hot-glue on your countertop, for tolerating a fur, felt, ribbon, button, and sequence mess in your living-room, and for making my childhood so memorable that I would labor six days to recreate similar memories for my own family!

Ditching the past?

Eric took a few pictures of me in my high-school and college jackets. I figure the snapshots will take up much less closet space.

Next year double-dribbling will not be allowed!

I took off work to see Travis play in his final game. It was definitely worth it- my #24 is insanely fun to watch!

The stockings were hung on the chimney with care…

I loved my oversized, homemade Christmas stocking when I was young. Each year Santa filled it full of treats, small gifts, an orange in the toe, and a large box of my favorite sugar cereal (a treat reserved only for camping trips and Christmas). Quite recently I have ambitiously taken on the stocking-making project for my family, though initially credulous as to how time-consuming it would be. Despite much sweat and a few drops of blood to make this undertaking appear arduous, tears have yet to be shed- I have thoroughly enjoyed my time spent, hand crafting each stocking with much love and care.

The finished stockings will be displayed in a later post.

First Annual Carmel-Chocolate-Apples

What a fantastic way to kick off the holidays- spending time with family and making yummy holiday treats. Thanks again Gail- my left arm and fingers still ache, but I had fun. And the apples are sinfully delicious!

Heidi and I did not plan to wear the exact same shirt (in different colors) that we purchased separately, unbeknownst to one another (how random)! My mom, sisters, and I have such similar taste that we have quite a few identical possessions.

An old family tradition made new!

When I was young I remember how much I loved watching my dad paint, whether it was a watercolor, a sign-bench, or my bedroom walls. Of particular note were the winter murals he designed for our living-room window each Christmas. This year I decided to continue the tradition. I bought the paints and let Tyler, Carly, and Travis go wild- they decorated eight of our front windowpanes and did an imaginative job!

Tyler: snowflake & gingerbread-man. Carly: reindeer, snowman, stocking & tree. Travis: bells & star.

The kids and I were having so much fun together that we barely noticed our frostbitten fingers… at least not until we realized the house was locked, with Emily inside!

Please… Always Save a Dance for Me

Before Emily was born and while the older two were away at school, Travis and I would frequently dance together. He always began with a bow and I a curtsy. Then we would imitate my parent’s style- dancing slow like they do whenever there is a beat. This year after we decorated the Christmas tree, with the candle burning and the holiday music playing, I felt a gentle tap on my shoulder. I turned around to face my handsome Travis, who bowed and then escorted me to the center of the room. We waltzed through two very lovely numbers. What a treat- my sweet, sweet boy!

Kids and Christmas

Yesterday evening was our annual Kids and Christmas Concert inside the Austad Auditorium, featuring the company’s choir groups, violinists, performing theater, and of course our dancers. Everyone did a fabulous job!

I have included two clips of Carly, dancing front and center. She is so graceful, elegant, and absolutely beautiful in this piece! I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching her this year.

Emily in five years?

Emily’s first… and hopefully last… Jazz Game!

She was adorable throughout the first quarter, horrible the second and third, and tolerable near the end (except for slapping the lady in front of me). Even though the woman was too drunk to care, it was still embarrassing.

A Mickey-Mouse Christmas over Thanksgiving

For Christmas this year mom and dad gave us Disneyland. They decided to take us in shifts: Bryan’s family and us over Thanksgiving and Amy’s and Heidi’s families this spring. Memories are always an amazing gift to bestow and we created scores of them at the most magical place on earth. Our vacation began the same way it ended- a thirteen hour drive, straight through from Utah to California and back again. Eight of us packed like sardines into an eight-seated vehicle! Mom and I rode with Emily and her bulky car-seat between us and bags beneath our feet. I have never been so numb in my life. However, on the way down, with only one hour of sleep the previous night, I was able to doze off amid the constrictiveness. In spite of it all we had great fun: laughing, visiting, and lunch at the Pasta Factory in St. George- a family favorite! On the way home our conversation centered on all things Disney.

Thanksgiving was the first of three consecutive days at Disneyland- early through the gates and home after midnight. And of course non-stop walking- with Eric along it is always Go, Go, Go! We met up with my Uncle Dennis and his family for a fantastic Thanksgiving meal at Mimi’s Café (thanks Nicole for the employee discount, even though you gave the staff such a beating… j/k). The hit rides on this trip were: Tower of Terror, Autopia, California Screamin, Midway Mania, Indiana Jones, Space Mountain, and the Matterhorn. The guys mastered the Fast Pass and we girls collected a stack of stroller passes several inches thick. All 13 of us were able to book-it from ride to ride and never waited longer than 20 minutes for any attraction. We covered considerable ground in three days- my feet are still in recovery! How do all those women walking the park in high-heeled boots do it… and why? They look ridicules!

The inseparable C’s:

Cousins under Carly’s charge:

Matterhorn whiplash:

(Still photography is easier on the neck!)

In honor of Kent who took the kids to see Wall-e this summer:

Doing what he enjoys most:

The entire crew:

(What troopers! Especially Lindsay- look at that load she is carrying!)

Pirate Island:

(Yo-Ho, Yo-Ho, don’t be so distracted by the swing-dancers in the front that you miss the crazy-baby running wild to the beat!)

A real thrill-seeker:

(The kids loved Redwood Adventure!)

Too old for baby stuff:

Around and around she goes:

Heelys with wads of napkins stuffed into the heels and a spiked hairdo only got Travis on this ride twice in six attempts:

(He was elated!)

With a single shot, Eric and Bryan both won stuffed animals at the basketball toss:

(Carly, the recipient of her dad’s exceptional aim, cradled “Sparkly-Spark Mansell” all over the park and even onto a few rides!)

The best thrill-adventure in the park:

(… at least Mom, Dad, Lindsay, Carly, Courtney, and Travis would agree with me!)
